Il programma Fissare l’arcipelago, avviato nel 2017 da Philippe Terrier-Hermann, artista e docente all’ISBA di Besançon e all’ENSAV La Cambre di Bruxelles, esplora le isole del Mediterraneo come spazi di ricerca e di creazione. Si fonda su questo arcipelago — spazi di libertà e di meticciato culturale — per interrogare le nozioni di territorio, migrazione, identità e frontiera.
Sicilia, Elba, Brioni, Frioul, Hydra e le isole dei Principi sono state vissute come spazi fluidi di peregrinazione, di memoria e di ancoraggi temporanei. Attraverso film, fotografie e installazioni, gli artisti hanno sviluppato un approccio che intreccia archivi, racconti locali e pratiche contemporanee, proponendo una riflessione etica ed estetica sulle urgenze del presente, valorizzando il pensiero nomade e l’alterità.
Nell’estate del 2024, una parte del gruppo di ricerca franco-belga è stata ospitata in residenza presso la Fondazione Sant’Elia, braccio operativo culturale della Città Metropolitana di Palermo. In risonanza, quattro artisti residenti in Sicilia sono stati invitati a presentare opere che esplorano anch’essi il tema dell’insularità mediterranea. Il frutto di tutti questi lavori è esposto nei 500 m² del secondo piano del Palazzo della Fondazione Sant’Elia.

The Fixing the Archipelago program, launched in 2017 by Philippe Terrier-Hermann, artist and professor at ISBA in Besançon and ENSAV La Cambre in Brussels, explores Mediterranean islands as spaces for research and creation. It draws on this archipelago —spaces of freedom and cultural blending— to question the notions of territory, migration, identity, and borders.
Sicily, Elba, Brioni, Frioul, Hydra, and the Princes’ Islands have been experienced as fluid spaces of wandering, memory, and temporary anchorage. Through films, photographs, and installations, the artists have developed an approach that weaves together archives, local narratives, and contemporary practices to offer an ethical and aesthetic reflection on today’s urgencies, emphasizing nomadic thought and otherness.
In the summer of 2024, part of the French-Belgian research team was hosted in residence at the Sant’Elia Foundation, cultural operator of the City of Palermo. In response, four artists living in Sicily were invited to present works also exploring the theme of Mediterranean insularity. The outcome of all these efforts is exhibited across the 500 m² of the second floor of the Palazzo of the Sant’Elia Foundation.

Le programme Fixer l'archipel, lancé en 2017 par Philippe Terrier-Hermann, artiste et enseignant à l’ISBA de Besançon et à l’ENSAV La Cambre de Bruxelles, explore îles méditerranéennes comme espace de recherche et de création. Il s'appuie sur cet archipel, espaces de liberté et de métissage culturel, pour interroger les notions de territoires, de migrations, d’identités et de frontières.
Sicile, Elbe, Brioni, Frioul, Hydra et les îles des Princes ont été vécus comme espaces fluides de pérégrination, de mémoire et d’ancrages temporaires. À travers films, photographies et installations, les artistes ont développé une démarche mêlant archives, récits locaux et pratiques contemporaines pour proposer une réflexion éthique et esthétique face aux urgences actuelles, valorisant la pensée nomade et l'altérité.
À l’été 2024, une partie de l’équipe de recherche franco-belge a été accueillie en résidence à la Fondation Sant’Elia, opérateur culturelle de la Ville de Palerme. En écho, quatre artistes vivant en Sicile sont invité.e.s à présenter des œuvres explorant, eux aussi, le thème de l’insularité méditerranéenne. Le fruit de tous ces travaux est exposé sur l’ensemble des 500 m² du deuxième étage du Palais de la Fondation Sant’Elia.
